About Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is a breathtaking alpine park located in northwestern Montana, along the border of Canada. Often called the “Crown of the Continent”, the park is defined by jagged mountain peaks, crystal-clear alpine lakes, expansive valleys, and remnants of ancient glaciers.

The landscapes here feel dramatic and wild. Towering mountains rise sharply from the valleys below, waterfalls cascade down cliffs, and wildlife sightings are common. Glacier’s scenery is both powerful and delicate, with fragile ecosystems that change quickly with elevation and season.

This is a park that feels truly untamed and rewards visitors who are prepared to explore its rugged terrain.

What Makes Glacier National Park Worth Visiting?

Grinnell Glacier

Glacier National Park is widely considered one of the most spectacular national parks in the United States.

Glacier is particularly worth visiting if:

  • You love mountain sceery and alpine environments
  • You enjoy hiking, photography, and wildlife viewing
  • You’re looking for a park that feels wild and immersive
  • You don’t mind planning ahead for permits and access

While Glacier requires more preparation than some parks, the payoff is unforgettable scenery and a deep sense of wilderness.

How Long Should I Spend in Glacier National Park?

Glacier National Park is large and diverse, with many distinct regions. 2-3 days allows you to see the highlights and scenic drives, but I recommend 4-6 days for hiking and exploring multiple areas. Many visitors find that no matter how long they stay, it never feels like enough.

When Should I Visit Glacier National Park?

Summer (July-September) is the best season overall to visit. Going-to-the-Sun Road should be fully open (weather permitting), most trails will be accessible, and it’s peak wildflower season. Keep in mind that this is also peak tourist season, and there’s going to be a lot of people. If you want to skip the crowds and don’t mind some areas of the park being inaccessible, a great time of year to go would be June or September.
