Top 5 Campsites I’ve Loved

In this list, I’m sharing my top 5 favorite campsites from the national parks I’ve visited- places that stood out for their views, tranquility, or proximity to incredible trails. Camping is one of my favorite ways to connect with nature and fully immerse myself in the beauty of the great outdoors. Over the years, I’ve had the chance to set up camp in some truly unforgettable spots, from serene forest clearings to breathtaking desert overlooks. Whether you’re a seasoned camper or planning your first trip, these spots are sure to inspire your next adventure under the stars!

1. Gold Bluffs Beach Campground in Redwood National Park

Gold Bluffs Beach Campground is, without a doubt, the most incredible campsite I’ve ever experienced. I often find myself dreaming of returning to this stunning spot and spending a full week camping right on the beach.

What sets this campsite apart is its sheer, breathtaking beauty. Imagine pitching your tent with the Pacific Ocean just steps away- falling asleep to the soothing sounds of waves is an experience I’ll never forget. While every campsite is close to the beach, a few are directly on the sand. If that sounds like a dream to you, I highly recommend booking early to secure one of these beautiful spots.

Another standout feature at Gold Bluffs Beach is the unexpected luxury of hot showers!!!! For frequent campers, you know how rare and cherished this amenity can be. The bathrooms were consistently clean, and the friendly campsite hosts made the stay even more enjoyable.

While the drive to the campground involves navigating a gravel road that’s not in the best condition, it’s entirely doable. We managed it in a Ford Fusion without any issues, so most vehicles should be just fine.

From its pristine beachside location to its well-maintained facilities, this campsite truly feels like a little slice of paradise. Whether you’re an avid camper or just looking for a unique escape, Gold Bluffs Beach is one place you won’t want to miss.

2. Jumbo Rocks Campground in Joshua Tree National Park

When planning my trip to Joshua Tree, I kept coming across rave reviews about Jumbo Rocks campground. People often describe it as a “giant playground for grown-ups”, and they were not wrong!

As the name suggests, this campground is surrounded by towering jumbo rocks that create an incredible setting for exploration and fun. Each campsite feels like it’s been carved out between the rocks, offering a unique blend of adventure and privacy. The towering formations around our site made it feel private while also giving us plenty of space to climb and explore.

One of the highlights was watching the sunset and stargazing atop the boulders. We climbed up with our dinner and enjoyed an unforgettable meal while the sun painted the sky in shades of purple and pink. Later, the dark skies of the park revealed a blanket of stars behind the iconic Joshua Trees at our campsite.

Jumbo Rocks truly lived up to its reputation as the perfect place to embrace your inner child and reconnect with nature. Whether you’re scrambling over rocks, soaking in the peace and quiet, or gazing at the stars, this campground is an experience you’ll treasure.

3. Jenny Lake Campground in Grand Teton National Park

Jenny Lake Campground quickly became one of my favorite campgrounds in Grand Teton National Park. Its location is unbeatable, just a short walk from the sparkling waters of Jenny Lake and some of the park’s most iconic trails, like Cascade Canyon and Inspiration Point.

The experience here felt truly wild and immersive. As we pulled into our campsite, we were greeted by the sight of a moose strolling through the area- an exciting start to our stay! The rangers were incredibly friendly and shared stories about the wildlife, including a bear that had been spotted wandering through the camp in the days prior.

The campsites themselves were cozy, surrounded by towering trees and offering incredible views of the Tetons. Whether you’re watching the sunrise light up the peaks or unwinding after a day of hiking, Jenny Lake Campground offers the perfect mix of adventure and tranquility.

4. Fairholme Campground in Olympic National Park

Nestled near the western shores of Lake Crescent, Fairholme Campground offers a serene and picturesque camping experience. I loved being surrounded by lush greenery and towering evergreens, and this place makes a great base for exploring the wonders of Olympic National Park.

Waking up to the tranquil sounds of nature, I found myself truly immersed in the beauty of the Pacific Northwest. The nearby hiking trails, such as the stunning Marymere Falls, offer breathtaking views of waterfalls, moss-covered trees, and the vibrant forest.

Fairholme Campground is great for its prime location, giving you the option to explore the diverse ecosystems of Olympic National Park, from the temperate rainforests to the rugged coastline. Plus, being right by Lake Crescent adds an extra layer of peace and adventure to your stay.

Whether you’re looking to explore nearby hiking trails, enjoy a peaceful day by the lake, or venture out to discover the wonders of Olympic’s diverse landscapes, Fairholme Campground offers the perfect balance of relaxation and adventure.

5. Islay Creek Campground

While Islay Creek Campground itself might not be the most exciting in terms of amenities or site privacy, its location is what truly makes it special. The campsites are relatively small, and there’s not much seclusion between them. However, what makes this spot stand out is its close proximity to a stunning, tranquil beach with the sound of crashing waves as your backdrop.

The beach is relatively quiet, with fewer crowds, providing an escape into nature that feels peaceful and serene. I loved the opportunity to step away from the hustle and bustle and enjoy the calming rhythm of the ocean.
