Gateway Arch

About Gateway Arch National Park
Gateway Arch National Park is an urban national park located in downtown St. Louis, Missouri. Unlike most national parks, it is not a vast natural landscape but rather a historic monument and surrounding grounds centered around the iconic Gateway Arch.
The park primarily preserves the Gateway Arch itself, a 630-foot stainless steel monument built to commemorate westward expansion in the United States. Surrounding the arch are manicured lawns, paved walkways, a museum, and riverfront views of the Mississippi River.
If you’re expecting hiking trails, wildlife, or immersive nature, this park will feel very different from most others in the national park system.
What Makes Gateway Arch National Park Worth Visiting?
I want to preface this by saying there is not much nature to this national park. If you enjoy history, national monuments, and a more urban setting, this park would be great for you.
Gateway Arch is particularly worth visiting if:
- You’re interested in American history and westward expansion
- You enjoy architecture and city landmarks
- You’re already visiting St. Louis
- You want a quick, easy national park visit
However, if you’re seeking wilderness, scenic landscapes, or outdoor adventure, this park may feel underwhelming. Gateway Arch functions much more like a national monument than a traditional national park, and the experience is largely educational rather than nature-focused.
How Long Should I Spend in Gateway Arch National Park?
Most visitors only need 1-3 hours to experience Gateway Arch National Park. With 1 Hour you can walk the grounds and view the Arch, and with 2-3 Hours you can visit the museum and ride the tram to the top.
This makes Gateway Arch one of the easiest national parks to visit on a tight schedule.
When Should I Visit Gateway Arch National Park?
The best seasons to visit are spring (April-May) and fall (September-October) due to mild temperatures and pleasant walking conditions. However, this park can be enjoyed year round.

A Note On Gateway Arch’s National Park Status
Gateway Arch National Park is often debated within the national park community. While it is officially designated as a national park, it lacks the natural landscapes typically associated with the title. In many ways, it feels more like a national monument focused on history rather than nature.
That said, it plays an important role in preserving a significant chapter of American history. Whether or not it fits your personal definition of a “national park,” it can still be a worthwhile stop, especially if you’re already in St. Louis or working toward visiting all U.S. national parks.
